A new brochure explaining the aims and activities of the European Commission's programme for International Cooperation in research (INCO) is now available on-line. The brochure, entitled 'European research open to the world' explains why INCO was set up in the Commission's Fourth RTD Framework Programme, which ran from 1994 to 1998. It then goes on to outline the enlarged frameworks for European science and technology cooperation, how the COST initiative assists 28 European countries to coordinate their research activities, the role played by 'Eureka' - the initiative that promotes cooperation and collaboration between industry - and how the EU is cooperating with non-European industrialised countries. In addition, the brochure reviews how the EU promotes research and development collaboration with 'the other Europe' - those countries outside the EU. Finally, there is a description of how European policies are encouraging research to promote development.
