For those looking for suppliers of alternatives to ozone depleting substances in applications such as foams, refrigeration and solvents, the European Commission's Environment Directorate-General has created an on-line database listing companies offering alternative substances and technologies. Ozone-depleting substances (ODS) are included in many applications because of the usefulness of many of their properties, such as stability, non-toxicity and chemical inertness. But alternatives must now be developed as ODS production and consumption is phased out. The Commission has therefore set up the new database to help companies find and contact suppliers of ODS alternatives. The Commission is now offering to add the details of companies requesting a mention on the database to the service, which it believes will be a valuable reference tool for ODS users, and small and medium-sized enterprises in particular. The database can be accessed on the Web, at: http://europa.eu.int/comm/dg11/ozone/contacts.htm
