The first calls of 2000 for the Fifth Framework's Programmes horizontal component, 'Confirming the international role of Community Research', were launched on 15 March 2000. Two calls have been published in the Official Journal of the European Communities, one for research for development, and the other for awareness and training. The first call relates to shared cost actions, concerted actions and thematic networks, and covers African, Caribbean and Pacific countries (ACP), and Mediterranean countries including Mediterranean partner countries. A total of 85.5 million euro is available for this call, identified by ICFP500A4PR02, and the deadline is 15 September 2000. Proposals should be submitted in one step. The objectives of the programme are to undertake research to tackle the challenges posed to developing countries, mobilising the best of research teams composed of scientists in Europe in partnership with developing countries, using cooperation to support Community development cooperation policy. Inter and multidisciplinary approaches will be favoured. Three levels of research are envisaged, comprising policy research determining the conditions for sustainable development; systems research on natural capital and the human environment including health; and research on specific scientific and technological problems to generate the tools for sustainable development. There are also certain regional priorities. Proposers are reminded to consult the Official Journal of the European Communities, OJ No C 74 of 15.3.2000 p 9, for further details. The second call, identified by ICFP500A1AM04 and ICFP500A2AM03, concerns awareness and training actions concerning the Fifth Framework Programme, to be conducted on the initiative of organisations from pre-accession states, and newly independent states and the Central and east European countries (CEECs). Particular consideration will be given to the areas of partner search, consortium building proposal preparation, contract negotiation, and project management. For States in the pre-accession phase, 0.6 million euro has been earmarked for proposals received on or before 15 June 2000. For the Newly Independent States and the CEECs not in the pre-accession phase, 0.6 million euro has also been made available, and the deadline for calls for proposals is 15 September 2000. Further details are available on the Official Journal of the European Communities, OJ No C 74 of 15.3.2000 p 7. Information on the rules of participation and how to prepare and submit proposals is given in the Guide for Proposers, which can be obtained along with the Work Programme and other information relating to the calls from the European Commission or from the CORDIS FP5 web service at: URL: http://cordis.europa.eu/inco2/calls/200001.htm And URL: http://cordis.europa.eu/inco2/calls/200002.htm For the first call on research for development: The Guide for Proposers is available from: European Commission Directorate-General RTD-E-4 Rue de la Loi/Wetstraat 200 B-1049 Brussels E-mail: inco@ec.europa.eu URL: http://cordis.europa.eu/fp5 For the second call on awareness and training: The Guide for Proposers is available from: European Commission Directorate-General RTD-E-1 Rue de la Loi/Wetstraat 200 B-1049 Brussels E-mail: inco@ec.europa.eu URL: http://cordis.europa.eu/fp5
