The Commission submitted on 20 December 1990 amendments (COM(90) 683) to its proposal for a Council Regulation on action by the Community for the protection of the environment in the Mediterranean region. Inter alia: To prevent overlap, a report shall be drawn up on all existing programmes and projects designed to protect the environment of the Mediterranean region; publicity regarding the need to protect the region, together with the training of young adults and environmental education for children, shall be promoted. The scientific and technical objectives are also amended, including: Account should be taken of clean technologies best suited to the conditions; reforestation using indigenous species shall be encouraged; measures shall counter soil deterioration caused by fire, desertification and coastal erosion.
