The European Commission has approved an operational programme in the field of statistics in Portugal. The programme, entitled PRINEST (1994-97), aims at continuing the modernization and regionalization procedures of the Portuguese statistical system, which was launched under the first Community Support Framework for Portugal. PRINEST should bring the Portuguese system more into line with Community standards for statistical information collection systems. The programme will establish new regional statistical centres, an efficient information infrastructure, and the implementation or improvement of records for industry, households and national accounts. The budget for the programme is ECU 40 million, of which ECU 30 million will be provided by the European Regional Development Fund.
