The European Commission is inviting proposals for RTD actions under its specific programme in the field of biotechnology (BIOTECH II) (1994-1998). Organizations eligible to participate in the programme are invited to submit proposals for RTD actions in the following areas: - Cell factories (Area 1): . 1.1 - Biological components of cell factories; . 1.2 - Biochemical engineering components of cell factories; - Genome analysis (Area 2): . 2.1 - Sequencing; - Plant and animal biotechnology (Area 3): . 3.1 - Plant molecular and cellular biology; . 3.2 - Animal physiopathology; . 3.2.2 - Animal models; - Cell communication in neurosciences (Area 4): . 4.1 - Development of the nervous system; . 4.2 - Regeneration of the nervous system; . 4.3 - Degeneration and apoptosis in the nervous system; . 4.4 - Management of information by the nerve cells; . 4.5 - Cell-to-cell communication in the nervous system; - Immunology and trans-disease vaccinology (Area 5): . 5.2 - Trans-disease vaccinology; - Structural biology (Area 6): . 6.1 - Structure-function relationships; - Pre-normative research, biodiversity and social acceptance (Area 7): . 7.1 - In-vitro alternatives to animal experiments in pharmaco-toxicology; . 7.2 - Biosafety; . 7.4 - Biodiversity; - Infrastructures (Area 8): . 8.1 - Information infrastructures; . 8.2 - Genetic archives and stock centres; . 8.3 - Assessment of infrastructures; The call covers: - Objectives requiring concentrated means (areas 1-4); - Objectives addressed by concertation (areas 5-8); - Objectives treated by means of horizontal activities, including: . Demonstration activities (RTD projects related to the eight above-specified areas); . Scientific studies in the area of biotechnology and society (ethical, social and legal aspects); . Scientific studies on socio-economic impact. Proposals for shared-cost preparatory awards in view of the participation of SMEs in RTD projects can be submitted continually until 31 December 1996 (12.00). This applies to all areas including those themes present in the biotechnology work programme that are not covered by the present call. Proposals for shared-cost actions (RTD projects, demonstration and integrated projects), for concerted actions, and for preparatory, accompanying and support measures must be sent to the Commission before 10 January 1996 (12. 00). Detailed information concerning the procedure to follow for the submission of proposals (information package), and the contract that will be established in respect of selected proposals, will be available on request from the Commission's services. The description of work undertaken in previous and related programmes will also be provided upon request.
