The European Research Consortium for Informatics and Mathematics (ERCIM) was founded in 1988. Its membership now comprises leading European information technology and mathematics research institutes in 14 different countries. ERCIM members are strongly involved in basic and strategic research and advanced developments with industry. They participate in more than 250 European projects with programmes such as EUREKA, ESPRIT, DRIVE and RACE. ERCIM effectively acts as a bridge between academia and industry and is a major force for technology transfer in Europe. The objectives of ERCIM are: - To promote research in computer science, information technology and mathematics on a European level; - To contribute to the shaping of future European research programmes in this field and to identify research areas needing special attention; - To strive for a European consortium of excellence in mathematics, computer science and information technology and to support research projects which complement each other in such a way as to enable more research areas to be covered and/or others studied more intensively; - To pool resources and know-how, thereby strengthening the European position on a global research and technology market. ERCIM activities currently include: a sponsored workshop programme, working groups on specific themes, an advanced training programme, annual symposia, a post-doctoral fellowship programme, scientific publications and a newsletter.
