The European Commission, DG XXII, has published the first in series of annual reports on education policy in the European Union. The report, entitled "Key data on education in the European Union", brings together statistics on and analysis of the various European education systems. The aim of the report is to promote mutual understanding of Member States' national education systems using a comparative basis and form of presentation. The information included in this publication is based on statistics collected by EUROSTAT and qualitative data produced by EURYDICE. The report is presented in two parts. The first contains the main key data on education, while the second presents a general outline of the issue of language teaching. It is the product of close cooperation between the European Commission's Task Force for Human Resources (DG XXII), EUROSTAT, the EURYDICE network and the LINGUA bureau.
