The first calls for proposals for INFO2000 - the proposed multiannual Community programme aimed at stimulating the development of a European multimedia content industry and to encouraging the use of multimedia content in the emerging Information Society (1996-1999) - are expected to be published in the second quarter of 1996, following the formal adoption of the programme.

The areas expected to be covered under the first calls are as follows:

- First call: Establishment of a Multimedia Information Demonstration and Support Network (MIDAS-NET) composed of organizations active in promoting the Information Society;

- Second call: Stimulation of pilot projects to contribute to the establishment of a European capacity to produce multilingual, interactive, multimedia information products, and overcome technological, cultural, market and other barriers to the growth of the European information industry.
