The European Commission, DG XIII, has published a report entitled "The IDEE project - Case studies and interviews with European company heads and opinion leaders concerning the industrial valorization of research". The report presents the results of the IDEE survey, undertaken within the Community's specific programme for the dissemination and exploitation of the results of RTD activities (INNOVATION), which studied the process of industrial and commercial valorization of research results in Italy, France, Spain, and Germany. Derived from French, the term "valorization" indicates the "exploitation, promotion, transfer, and application, with the greatest benefit, of the results of research". The survey carried out was based on interviews with industrial leaders in the four countries concerned and on case studies from those countries. The observations from the survey include: - Yield of results of research programmes is often unpredictable; - The valorization process cannot be modelled; - Dissemination of information should be limited, and targeted, and should make use of human contact; - Only a limited number of partners should be involved; - Valorization should be on an international scale; - Too many of the results of research remain unexploited.
