Cross-border cooperation in French and Italian Alpine areas
The European Commission is to provide Structural Fund aid of approximately ECU 57 million to support cross-border cooperation between the Alpine regions of France and Italy. The aid, which has been approved under the Community INTERREG initiative, is to benefit the regions of Rhône-Alpes, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur in France, and the Valle d'Aosta, Piemont and Liguria regions in Italy. It aims to assist these regions by improving transport connections, promoting the conservation of cross-border cultural heritage and advancing cross-border economic activity. The total cost of the aid programme is ECU 160 million, with EU investment being matched by funding from the Italian and French public authorities (ECU 58.4 million) and from the private sector (ECU 44.7 million). The programme has been agreed within the framework of partnership between the Commission and the national and regional authorities of the two Member States. This partnership will also be responsible for the monitoring of the programme.
