The European Commission is to fund the INOGATE (Inter-State Oil and Gas Transport to Europe) programme through the TACIS technical assistance programme for the New Independent States of the former Soviet Union and Mongolia. INOGATE aims to ensure that Europe has long term supplies of oil and gas from the former Soviet Union. In total over the four years of the programme, INOGATE will receive some ECU 50 million from TACIS. In 1996, TACIS will provide funding of ECU 16.5 million. This money will go towards the rehabilitation of existing pipelines and the definition of alternative routes in order to diversify supply. The second meeting of the INOGATE Working Group was held from 20 to 22 November 1996, with the aim of agreeing on the priority projects to be funded from the 1996 TACIS budget.
