The European Commission, DG XII, has published a book detailing the activities carried out by Envirotrace, the network for trace analytical chemistry in the environment, funded by the specific RTD programme in the field of Human Capital and Mobility (HCM) under the Third RTD Framework Programme. The partners in the Envirotrace network (14 institutions in 7 EU Member States) conducted research in a number of areas with the overall aim of developing and improving methods for environmental trace analysis and their application to ecosystems. Major topics covered by the network include: - Development and improvement of methods for sampling and sample preparation; - Determination of elements and their species at low concentration levels; - Determination of organic micropollutants; - Development of screening methods for environmental pollutants; - Development of sensors for automatic and remote pollutant analysis; - Micro and surface analysis of environmental specimens; - Data and information processing for environmental trace analysis; - Study of ecosystems. The Envirotrace partners included one industrial participant, which ensured that the research and training undertaken by the network was of relevance to industry. The book contains details of the research carried out, as well as information about the partners and their institutions.
