The Institute for Prospective Technological Studies of the European Commission's Joint Research Centre has published two related studies on the future of transport telematics technologies. The two studies use different methodologies to forecast growth in the use of, and development of, transport telematics technologies in European cities up to 2015. The first study uses the Delphi method, which involves synthesising the opinions of experts in the field, given in a series of round table discussions. The second study uses the Cross Impact Systems and Matrices (SMIC) forecasting method, which analyses written opinions of experts. The studies look at the likely development of advanced telematics technologies in the following areas: - Demand management; - Travel and traffic information systems; - Integrated urban traffic management systems; - Integrated inter-urban traffic management systems; - Driver assistance and cooperative driving; - Freight and fleet management; - Public transport management.
