The European Commission has approved aid of approximately ECU 17 million, from the Cohesion Fund, for a shared local-authority solid waste treatment system in the Algarve region of Portugal. The expected total cost of the project is about ECU 20 million, to which the Cohesion Fund will contribute 85%. The project will help make a substantial improvement to the environment in the Algarve and will have a major socio-economic impact given the importance of the quality of the environment to the main economic activity in the region - tourism. The work is scheduled to be completed in August 1998.
