The European Commission, DG V, has launched a call for proposals for preparatory measures and pilot projects under the proposed Safety Actions for Europe (SAFE) programme. The Commission's proposal for the SAFE programme is currently being examined by the Council. In preparation for its adoption and full implementation, the Commission will support a limited number of pilot actions. These will aim to define more accurately activities and priorities for implementing the programme and show that efficient health and safety management improves the competitiveness of firms and boosts employment. The general objective of the programme is to improve safety, hygiene and health at work and prevent or reduce occupational risks, particularly in SMEs, by: - Promoting development of practical solutions to workplace risks; - Supporting identification and dissemination of best practices for combating occupational accidents and diseases; - Suggesting means of effectively applying Community legislation on health and safety at work; - Promoting innovative approaches to emerging areas of occupational risk; - Promoting education and training aimed at improving knowledge of Community legislation and increasing awareness as regards the working environment. Projects will be supported in the following areas: - Development of reference workplaces which have designed practical solutions to workplace risks and which can serve as models; - Initiatives in the field of information, education and training designed to improve knowledge of Community health and safety legislation and draw attention to health and safety at work; - Projects which provide guidance on health and safety measures relevant to one or more sectors of activity, especially in more than one Member State; - Innovative approaches to emerging areas of risk or high-risk activities, including the use of safe and/or clean technologies. Community support will amount to a maximum of 60% of the total budget for the proposed measure.
