The European Commission, DG XI, has published an invitation to tender for the completion of a study concerning environmental impact assessments (EIAs) and geological repositories for radioactive waste. The present invitation to tender is a republication of a previous invitation to tender which was cancelled for procedural reasons. The study will examine the implementation, by Member States, of Directive 85/337/EEC as far as it concerns radioactive waste storage and disposal, the role played by the EIA in the case for a repository and the extent and the definition of the requirements. In particular, it will include a review of the role and contents of EIAs for the long-term or final storage of intermediate and/or high-level wastes in Member States of the European Union. The study is not limited to the radiological impact on the environment. It should cover all aspects of environmental impact. More specifically, the study should examine: - The implication for EIAs of adopting a range of 'safety indicators'; - The role of the public, NGOs and consumer groups in EIAs; - The possible impact of retrievability on the environment. The study, to be conducted in close cooperation with the Commission services concerned, must be completed within 18 months of signature of the contract. The relevant tender documents may be requested from: European Commission DG XI - Environment, nuclear safety and civil protection Mr. B.
