The European Commission, DG XI, has published an invitation to tender for a study contract relating to the assessment of hazardous waste from shops and small business outlets, within the context of the European Community Waste Management Policy. The study, which is to cover the 15 Member States of the European Union, will be required to: - Identify the main sources of hazardous waste from shops and other small business outlets which tend to deal directly with the public; - Assess the types and calculate the quantities of hazardous waste produced by each class of shop or outlet identified as a significant source of hazardous waste; - Assess the extent to which the waste operations of these shops and outlets are controlled by the competent authorities at national, regional and local level; - Identify who is responsible for the collection of the hazardous waste produced by such shops and outlets; - Identify who is responsible for the treatment and disposal of the waste produced by such shops and outlets and identify how the wastes produced are in fact treated, where possible indicating the method of recovery or disposal.
