The European Commission has put forward a proposal for a Council Decision on a Community Statistical programme to run from 1998 to 2002. This programme will be the fifth in the series, with the previous programme running from 1993 to 1997. The multiannual programme will set out strategies, priorities and work plans for the work of EUROSTAT, the Commission's Statistical Office. Annual programmes will set out in greater detail the work objectives for each year. The objectives of the programme are: - To meet the needs of Community policies and policy-makers; - To improve the partnership between EUROSTAT and its partners in the provision of the necessary data, particularly in view of the forthcoming enlargement of the EU; - To fix priorities and allocate resources within a framework of constant or diminishing resources at both Community and Member State levels.
