Development and Performance Assessment of Containment and Surveillance Techniques; LASCO, 1988-1991

Objective

Creation and operation of the LASCO laboratory (Laboratory for Surveillance and Containment) for the performance assessment, demonstration of containment and surveillance systems and training of inspectors.

Progress to end 1990

The construction of the LASCO laboratory (25O m2) has been completed at the end of the year including the major components for the experimental facilities (the model storage facility, the surveillance devices and the teleoperation module).

Detailed description of work foreseen in 1991 (expected results)

Experimental facilities will be installed, including the ones for the training of safeguards inspectors. The experimental programme for the performance tests of single C/S components (e.g. video cameras, seals) and integrated systems applied to the model of a modular nuclear storage area will be defined and initiated in cooperation with safeguards inspectors and selected plant operators. Full operation of LASCO is expected by middle of 1991. Statistical methods will be developed or adopted for the performance assessment of C/S devices.

Short description of evolution of work in 1992

- The demonstration and performance assessment of various advanced surveillance and monitoring devices and systems will be performed and their integration with teleoperation devices will be studied for storage areas. The selection of those devices will be made, according to the experience gained in 1991 and the requests from inspectorates.

- The application of LASCO to areas different from nuclear safeguards will be investigated.
