Organising Caucasus and Central Asian Services for Internet Offerings to NRENs

Project description

Integrating activities combining cooperation networks with transnational access and research projects

The Silk project provides connectivity to GEANT from the National Research and Edcation Networks (NRENs) of the eight Newly Independent States (NISs) of the Caucasus and Central Asia, and Afghanistan (the Silk countries). Dring the period of this proposal, the connectivity will continue to be provided via a VSAT satellite network called the Silk network. The Silk project is is supported by a number of organisations, with the largest funding coming from the NATO Science for Peace programme. The OCCASION project would both manage the Silk project and provide network management for the Silk network. It would also coordinate the provision of information on the NRENs of the Silk countries, and their related research activities.
Another aspect aspect of the OCCASION project is to provide the tools for researchers in the Silk countries to collaborate with their colleagues in the European Union; these tools are mainly Voice/IP (VoIP) and multimedia conferencing (MM-Conf).This provision does not mean developing new tools, but ensuring that existing tools are deployed usefully over the Silk network and the attached NRENs. It also includes providing a minimal set of equipment at each NREN to allow both VoIP and MM-Conf to be used, It includes both maintenance of the tools, and provision of the requisite servers to ensure that multi-way conferencing can be carried out.
The project will encourage the use of IPv6 for personal communications, and will assist NRENs to adopt IPv6 if they so desire. It includes training, so that researchers in the Silk countries can use the servides provided. Another aspect of the project is to identify significant user groups, active in both the Silk countires and the European Union, who need to use the Silk network for their collaborations. It will then foster the requisite training and jont workshops (co-funded with other bodies) to ensure useful collaboration can take place.
