Cooperation between Europe and India on eSafety

Objective

The main objective of EU-India is to improve road safety in India through a close cooperation between European and Indian stakeholders defining key issues for the deployment of intelligent transport systems and services and in particular intelligent vehicle safety systems (eSafety) in India. EU-India will strengthen Europe's participation in Indian R&D activities and accompanying measures, and explore mutual benefits of the co-operation and increase access to market opportunities in India. EU-India will organise workshops, business meetings and technical visits to build constituencies and raise awareness; disseminate, benchmark and validate research results in IST; promote European technologies, exchange of best practices and support activities related to standards and interoperability issues.

The project has been defined by the Indian Ministry of Science and Technology as a priority project to develop the cooperation on ITS development between the two areas. The project will make use of the close cooperation which has been established between the two organisations ERTICO - ITS Europe and AITS - ITS India. An agreement between the two organisations was signed in New Delhi 9 August 2005 in the presence of the Indian Minister for Science and Technology and the Indian Minister for Heavy Industry. The activities proposed will allow more focus on concrete priorities for ITS implementation in India and in particular with focus on eSafety. This will enhance the international cooperation activities of the Commission and will allow the European industry to prepare successful cooperation projects with Indian counterparts.
