Dynamic coverage Extension and Distributed Intelligence for human Centric applications with assured security, privacy and trust: from 5G to 6G

Periodic Reporting for period 1 - DEDICAT 6G (Dynamic coverage Extension and Distributed Intelligence for human Centric applications with assured security, privacy and trust: from 5G to 6G)

Période du rapport: 2021-01-01 au 2022-06-30

In future 6G wireless networks, it is imperative to support more dynamic resourcing and connectivity to improve adaptability, performance, and trustworthiness in the presence of emerging human-centric services with heterogeneous computation needs. DEDICAT 6G takes the next vital step beyond 5G by addressing techniques for maintaining an efficient placement of computation in the mobile network. In addition, the project targets the design and development of mechanisms for dynamic coverage extension through the exploitation of novel terminals and mobile client nodes, e.g. smart connected cars, robots, and drones. DEDICAT 6G also addresses security, privacy, and trust assurance especially for mobile edge services and enablers for novel interaction between humans and digital systems. The aim is to achieve (i) more efficient use of resources; (ii) reduction of latency, response time, and energy consumption; (iii) reduction of operational and capital expenditures; and (iv) reinforcement of security, privacy, and trust. DEDICAT 6G focuses on four use cases: Smart warehousing, Enhanced experiences, Public Safety and Smart Highway.
DEDICAT 6G will contribute to the following H2020 Societal Challenges: Climate action, environment, resource efficiency and raw materials; Europe in a changing world - inclusive, innovative and reflective societies ; Secure societies - protecting freedom and security of Europe and its citizens. DEDICAT 6G aims to contribute to the following, United Nations Sustainable development goals: Decent work and economic growth; Industry, innovation and infrastructure; Climate Action. DEDICAT 6G solutions contribute to the Commission’s strategy and vision on Connectivity for a European Gigabit Society. DEDICAT 6G mechanisms for the dynamic creation of coverage extensions will support service continuity also in “remote” or difficult to reach areas. The DEDICAT 6G Smart Warehousing use case will look into issues on how to enable remote control of at least some warehousing operations, while facilitating the enforcement of protective measures such as social distancing harnessing the power of B5G/6G technologies. The Enhanced Experience use case will also consider enabling “virtual” participation to large music/theatrical events making the experience as close as possible to a real one. Finally, DEDICAT 6G communication activities will strive to boost to the image of B5G/6G as an enabling technology that can help to tackle some pressing issues facing the society today, considering also potential public concerns to the impact of these technologies on public health.
The public project web site and a DEDICAT 6G community on Zenodo have been set up. Scenarios and requirements for the 4 DEDICAT 6G use cases have been specified. Two versions of the DEDICAT 6G architecture have been delivered.
DEDICAT 6G also delivered a first release of mechanisms for Dynamic Distribution of Intelligence. A first release of mechanisms for coverage extension was delivered. Moreover, a first approach for the specification of the DEDICAT 6G security framework and trust management platform was delivered. The project also delivered a first outline of the integration of the mechanisms developed into an overall working system instantiation in each use case and an overview of the pilot set-up per use case (including deployment of hardware and development and integration of use case specific components and simulations implemented) and the development of human-centric applications in the scope of the pilots. Furthermore, the corresponding validation plan for the pilots was specified including the scope of the validation activities, the list of metrics/KPIs to be evaluated and the methods to get these measures. The project has made available 9 public deliverables on its website and the Zenodo repository. The project has 14 publications in journals and conference proceedings and several dissemination and exploitation activities where project activities and project have been presented.
DEDICAT 6G will develop new mechanisms to dynamically co-distribute data, computation (i.e. data processing and analytics) and storage, based on network status information of both communication and computing loads. The dynamicity can come from different sources, namely share of elastic and inelastic on-demand services, user mobility, mobility of data sources, network resource consumption, and computing resource consumption to meet the requirements of real-time and ultra-low-delay sensitive innovative IoT applications. Since many of the required decision-making tasks are coupled, the effective distribution mechanisms must be able to jointly utilize the underlying reactive and proactive approaches for multicasting, computing offloading, and edge caching methods.
DEDICAT 6G will build on existing work to develop its dynamic coverage extension mechanisms that will rely on a combination of robots, drones and cars to offer the most satisfactory QoS to users through MAPs-based opportunistic radio network. Aspects that will covered as part of the work on DEDICAT 6G dynamic coverage extension mechanisms include: i) Addressing mobility aspects of client nodes to a greater extend and machine learning mechanisms for knowledge building to support the optimal configuration of the dynamic coverage extension through MAPs; ii) Application specific optimization of deployment, mobility, and operation of robots, drones and cars (e.g. for online video streaming, multimedia broadcasting) in a converged broadband wireless networking scenario; and iii) Integration of robots, drones and cars computation and communication resources along with other resources.
The DEDICAT 6G AI powered security management framework will leverage on SoTA and best practices to innovate on mechanisms for threat detection, classification, and risk mitigation in context of highly dynamic and distributed communication and computation networks. DEDICAT 6G will progress SoTA by integrating and validating (within project use cases and pilots) various functionalities into a comprehensive security and data protection framework (details can be found in section 1.4.3). DEDICAT 6G trust management platform will be based on high performance and efficient private permissioned blockchain (Hyperledger Fabric). The approach for utilizing private permissioned blockchain architectures for building the DEDICAT 6G trust management platform allows DEDICAT 6G to have full control over architecture design, hierarchical organization of decision making and consensus mechanism and smart contract templating. This way the blockchain architecture and consensus rules for each solution instantiation can be adapted and evolved as the rest of the DEDICAT 6G system is updated.
The innovations developed by DEDICAT 6G will result in novel products and services that, in addition to providing very substantial technological advances, also have a very high commercial value as well as a very strong potential market impact. SMEs and linked industries will strengthen their economic and IPR positions and show steady growth, which will create job opportunities. The deliverables of DEDICAT 6G will form the basis of technological advances and will open new possibilities for further National and International research beyond the project scope, thus contributing to the consolidation of the European Research Agenda and increased research investments.
