Application of new methods for moderately hard problems ushers in a new era of cryptography

Keeping data safe and secure despite the increasingly complex and decentralised mode of data processing is a pressing need with impact on everything from personal data safety to national security. Traditional cryptographic methods have dealt with problems that are rather black and white – easy or hard – yet ‘moderately hard’ problems abound. The EU-funded FGC project is exploring the application of a recently developed ‘fine-grained’ complexity theory of moderately hard problems and tools for average-case analysis to multiple levels of cryptographic tasks and advanced cryptographic applications.
