Steering and radiation effects in oriented crystals and their applications implementation into Geant4

Project description

Enhanced simulation of electromagnetic processes in crystals for the masses

The Geant4 toolkit for the simulation of the passage of particles through matter supports numerous investigations into a wide range of processes relevant to particle physics, nuclear physics, medical physics, accelerator design and space engineering. Crystalline materials whose structural characteristics enable unique and often exotic interactions with electromagnetic fields have wide applicability in such areas. With the support of the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions programme, the TRILLION project plans to integrate the physics of electromagnetic processes in oriented crystals and the design of specific applications of crystalline effects into the Geant4 simulation toolkit; moreover, it will enhance access via a free Geant4 license.

Objective

Crystalline structure is a unique environment for strong-field QED effects involving both high-energy charged particles and photons. A small piece of crystal material could be used as an intense source of X- and gamma-ray radiation, a positron source, a beam manipulation instrument, a compact detector and a compact wake-field accelerator as well. Consequently, a crystal could be useful for a wide range of applications in accelerator physics, high-energy frontier physics, nuclear physics, cosmic-ray detectors, dark matter search and radiation therapy.

The implementation of both physics of electromagnetic processes in oriented crystals and the design of specific applications of crystalline effects into Geant4 simulation toolkit as Extended Examples to bring them to a large scientific and industrial community and under a free Geant4 license is the main goal of the project.

The implementation of the following innovative applications into Geant4 will be mainly focused on:
1. Crystalline deflector to extract a charged particle beam from an accelerator (electron synchrotron, hadron collider) to supply fixed-target experiments by an intense low-emittance beam.
2. Crystalline source of intense coherent hard X-ray and gamma radiation, crystalline undulator.
3. Crystal-based hybrid positron source for both linear and circular e+e- colliders (ILC, FCC-ee) as well as for muon colliders.

The outgoing research phase of this MSCA-GF project at the Korea Institute of Science and Technology Information as well as training at Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology and University of Science and Technology and participation in high-tech Daedeok Innopolis exhibitions will bring the ER to a considerably higher level of competence. During the incoming phase at INFN Division of Ferrara supplemented by the secondments to DESY and IJClab the ER will finally reach his professional maturity and independence as well as will acquire a lot of new ideas to submit them as ERC proposals or to create high-tech startups and a lot of professional contacts to realize them.

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)

CORDIS classifies projects with EuroSciVoc, a multilingual taxonomy of fields of science, through a semi-automatic process based on NLP techniques. See: The European Science Vocabulary.
This project's classification has been validated by the project's team.

Keywords

Project’s keywords as indicated by the project coordinator. Not to be confused with the EuroSciVoc taxonomy (Fields of science)

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
