Cataract Simulator Diagnostics Device Development Using Computational Holographic Displays

Periodic Reporting for period 1 - KATSIM (Cataract Simulator Diagnostics Device Development Using Computational Holographic Displays)

Reporting period: 2022-04-01 to 2023-03-31

KATSIM project develops a vision simulator, which will help patients visualize the post-operative performance of different IOL options (monofocal, trifocal, others) as well as possible side-effects before cataract surgery. KATSIM diagnostic device would be used before cataract surgeries to help match the right patient to right IOL and reduce the anxiety of both patients and doctors. Computer generated holographic (CGH) display technology is the only technology which can create true 3D images with all the required depth and focus cues. The CGH display technology has not been applied to the ophthalmology field yet. CGH display technology enables to shape and steer the beam of light through the relatively clear areas of the cataractous lens. Pprogrammable exit pupil and holographic pupil formation help patients to see crisp images even through cataractous lenses. One can form single or multiple pupils, which help create images in different focal depths using the supermultiview principle initially developed to overcome the vergence and accommodation conflict (VAC) in 3D stereoscopic displays.
Progress during Year 1 :Prototype 1 Completed and successfully tested by partners in March 2023.
The exploitation plan outlines how the project partners intend to make use of the research results and take advantage of the project's activities. The following sections detail the exploitation plan for each partner.
Partner 1: KOC, Koc University, TURKIYE The exploitation plan for KOC includes:
Developing advanced prototypes of the device for tests and validation in clinics and hospitals.
Conducting training programs for healthcare professionals on how to use the device.
Establishing partnerships with European medical device companies to manufacture and distribute the device.
Participating in international conferences and events to promote the device and expand its market reach.
Publish scholarly articles in conferences and journals.
Communicate project outcomes within the consortium and to the general public.

BENEFITS and IMPACT:
Allows patients to experience post-surgery performance of different IOLs and side-effects before surgery
Helps patients and doctors make informed decisions
Revolutionizes cataract pre-surgery process
Huge impact in clinic
30% reduction in doctor visit times
Towards 100% patient satisfaction
