Chirality based all-optical logic gates

Objective

With the ever-growing demand for carrying and processing data in a fast and efficient way, optical computing and processing methods have become a promising candidate for the next-generation computing and processing applications, due to many advantages, such as high-speed and parallel data processing, compared to their electronic counterparts. In this project, I plan to construct the world first chirality-based all-optical logic gates. The initial plan is to significantly extend the preliminary results to many other nonlinear optical processes in monolayer two-dimensional layered materials with the aim to construct various chirality logic gates such as XNOR, XOR, NOR, AND, NAND, OR, Buffer, and NOT gates. I will also construct ultrafast (<10 fs) multiple-logic functions simultaneously with phase-matching-free nonlinear optics. Further, I will combine the valley properties of two-dimensional materials to demonstrate electrically configurable chirality logic gates. The chirality logic gates built in this project will work fundamentally different from the previously demonstrated optical gates, which will offer numerous advantages (e.g. atomically thin footprint, multiple processing, parallel operation, and ultrafast processing speed across a wide range of wavelengths).

Keywords

Project’s keywords as indicated by the project coordinator. Not to be confused with the EuroSciVoc taxonomy (Fields of science)

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.

Net EU contribution

Net EU financial contribution. The sum of money that the participant receives, deducted by the EU contribution to its linked third party. It considers the distribution of the EU financial contribution between direct beneficiaries of the project and other types of participants, like third-party participants.
