Bauhaus of the Seas Sails

Periodic Reporting for period 1 - BoSS (Bauhaus of the Seas Sails)

Reporting period: 2023-01-01 to 2024-06-30

The Bauhaus of the Seas (BoS) project is a flagship initiative under the New European Bauhaus (NEB), aiming to transform coastal and maritime regions into models of sustainable and inclusive living. It integrates NEB’s principles—Beautiful, Sustainable, Together—into coastal ecosystems, addressing European Green Deal goals. Focusing on Europe’s key water bodies, BoS targets critical areas like Lisbon, Oeiras, Venice, Genoa, Rotterdam, Malmö, and Hamburg. The project involves 18 partners across disciplines, launching pilot demonstrations in adaptive architecture, sustainable food systems, and regenerative design. These efforts aim to generate replicable solutions with significant environmental, social, and economic impacts, contributing to NEB and European Green Deal objectives. BoS operates through five strategic actions: mapping environmental resources, fostering trans-geographic understanding, reconnecting communities, renewing sustainable practices, and storytelling. By positioning coastal regions as NEB laboratories, BoS envisions a future where art, culture, and science drive impactful, nature-based solutions, and sustainable coastal development.
BoS has launched pilot projects in multiple coastal regions, developing co-design methodologies and frameworks for replication and impact assessment. Achievements include:

Pilot Projects and Co-Design: Pilots have advanced initiatives like regenerative food practices and adaptive architecture. The Zoöp model integrates non-human perspectives into decision-making, ensuring environmental stewardship in community practices.
Technological and Methodological Innovations: BoS has developed a geospatial platform to visualise and assess the impact of interventions, aiding in decision-making across regions.
Community Engagement: Cross-border collaborations have involved diverse stakeholders, with workshops and events promoting knowledge exchange. The Ocean Ambassadors program engages local communities in advocating for sustainable practices.
Locally Based Approaches: Pilots emphasize place-specific challenges, generating tailored, scalable interventions. These initiatives are measuring sustainability, inclusivity, and aesthetic value through qualitative and quantitative methods.
Aesthetic Practice: BoS integrates art, culture, and creative practices into interventions, emphasizing beauty as a core component of sustainable living, enhancing lived experiences and supporting cultural regeneration.
Led by a diverse coalition, Drops have been initiated across seven pilot cities, engaging cultural practitioners in a unique co-design process. Sea Forums and the Ocean Ambassadors program involve local citizens in long-term goals. BoS-Zoöp workshops introduce governance models integrating non-human perspectives, with each pilot appointing a Speaker for the Living. As pilots progress, storytelling, replication, and impact evaluation phases are being implemented. Dissemination through exhibitions, media, and conferences amplifies the lighthouse effect and promotes replication opportunities.
