Periodic Reporting for period 1 - COBIOE (GROWING CONNECTION FOR BIO ECOSYSTEMS)
Reporting period: 2023-03-01 to 2024-02-29
The COBIOE project, "Growing Connection for BIO Ecosystems," targets critical gaps in the European bioproduction landscape, which includes biologics, innovative therapeutics like gene and cellular therapies, and high-tech drugs based on cell and molecular biology. Biotherapies, comprising 24.3% of the global drug market, are poised for substantial growth. However, Europe's bioproduction sector faces challenges such as fragmented ecosystems, uneven regional development, and the need for advanced technological integration for Industry 4.0.
Key problems addressed include:
Fragmented Ecosystems: Diverse but unevenly developed bioproduction ecosystems.
Innovation Divide: Technological gaps between regions, with peripheral areas lagging.
Lack of Coordination: Inadequate integration between regional, national, and European initiatives.
Infrastructure and Investment Gaps: Essential for scaling up capabilities.
Skills and Workforce Development: Critical for meeting bioproduction 4.0 challenges.
COBIOE aims to:
Map and Integrate Ecosystems: Provide a comprehensive overview of European bioproduction value chains.
Promote Synergies and Collaboration: Foster collaboration across regions.
Build a Robust Digital Platform: Enhance stakeholder engagement and data sharing.
Align Policy and Funding: Support bioproduction through cohesive strategies.
Mapping and Database Creation: Established foundational tools and a comprehensive internal database detailing key players and ecosystem maturity.
Consultations and Data Validation: Extensive consultations gathered crucial data on ecosystem structures, challenges, and strengths, invaluable for the SWOT analysis.
SWOT Analysis: Preliminary results shared, with the final comprehensive analysis ready.
WP3: Modelling the European Bioproduction Value Network
Virtual Value Chain Launch: Designed and launched in December 2023. User feedback confirmed its adequacy and scalability.
WP5: Digital Connection System Development
User Consultations and Service Provider Selection: Ensured the digital system aligns with COBIOE’s objectives.
Platform Development and Launch: Successfully developed and launched an integrated digital platform in December 2023 with essential functionalities like the smart directory and value chain visualization tools.
Iterative Improvements: The COBIOE Value Chain Hub is on track to be fully operational by July 2024, with ongoing enhancements based on user feedback.
