Project description
Microelectronic chips with low energy consumption
Energy consumption poses major environmental and industrial challenges, particularly as excess heat hampers the performance of microchips. The FerroElectric Spin-Orbit (FESO) device, developed by Nellow, offers a solution with ultra-low energy consumption. Supported by the EIC-funded UPSPRING project, efforts will focus on enhancing FESO technology to cut chip energy use by a factor of 1 000, thereby unlocking new levels of performance. The project will also drive industrial uptake and support a business strategy to position Nellow as a competitive European player in the microelectronics market. In doing so, UPSPRING aims to help the EU meet its goal of a 20 % global semiconductor market share, reduce energy consumption, and advance digital sovereignty and sustainability targets.
Objective
UPSPRING aims to reduce the energy consumption of microelectronics chips by a factor of 1000, to unlock their performance potential. This energy consumption is both an environmental problem and a crucial industrial issue, as the associated heating is nowadays the limiting factor of the performance of the chips.
Nellow is a company targeting the market of microelectronic chips for logic operations and artificial intelligence (AI), thanks to the invention of a new type of component with ultra-low energy consumption: the FerroElectric Spin-Orbit (FESO) device. Protected by a portfolio of more than 5 patents, FESO results from 15 years of collaboration between two world-leading research institutions in new microelectronic solutions: the Spintec laboratory (CEA Grenoble, Univ. Grenoble Alpes & CNRS) and the Albert Fert laboratory (Paris-Saclay). This technology has the potential to become the global solution for computing and AI.
The UPSPRING project will enable us to advance the FESO technology, which has already garnered interest from key industrial players. It will also refine and implement the optimal business strategy for Nellow, and enable access to the rapidly growing semiconductor market (CAGR 10%, $1 trillion by 2030). The goal of UPSPRING is to create a new industrial player in Europe in the field of microelectronic component manufacturing.
The founders of Nellow invented within their research institutes the core intellectual property, and developed a unique knowhow. Nellow possesses a world-class scientific team, and benefits from an exceptional technological environment.
The question of energy consumption, at the heart of UPSPRING, addresses priority EU public policies relative to environmental sustainability. UPSPRING will also contribute to the EU objective of reaching a semiconductor market share of 20%, with the long-term goal of inducing a geopolitical shift in the semiconductor supply chain, and thus to ensure the European digital sovereignty.
