Iktos Robotics: Integrating AI and Robotics for efficient Drug Design and Discovery

Project description

AI and robotics redesign drug discovery

Pharmaceutical research and development often ends in failure. Creating a new medicine usually takes over a decade and costs billions of euro. This problem highlights the urgent need to rethink how new drugs are discovered and delivered to patients. The EIC-funded AIR-3D project presents a closed-loop platform that combines generative AI with automated synthesis and testing. By merging software with robotics, the platform designs new molecules on a computer, quickly synthesises them in the lab, and learns from actual results. This method could reduce discovery timelines from five years to just two, significantly improving efficiency and success rates. AIR-3D seeks to transform pharmaceutical research and development and accelerate access to life-saving treatments.

Objective

Drug discovery is a lengthy and costly process, often exceeding a decade and involving investments upwards of €1.3bn. Despite these efforts, a staggering 90% of drug candidates fail in clinical trials, never reaching patients. This inefficiency underscores the urgent need for innovation in drug discovery methodologies.
Iktos proposes a transformative approach with its closed-loop AI-guided autonomous drug discovery platform, leveraging generative AI and built-in synthetic accessibility. This paradigm shift addresses key challenges in traditional drug discovery, including the generation of truly novel molecules, the speed of synthesis, and the management of high-dimensional data. Central to Iktos' solution are advanced SaaS platforms such as Makya and Spaya, powered by AI for rapid exploration of vast chemical spaces and efficient synthesis route planning. In this EIC Accelerator project, we want to combine AI and robotics to form a closed-loop, data-informed discovery platform, integrating AI-driven automated synthesis and testing into our workflow. Combined together these technologies enable the in silico design of optimal molecules and their corresponding synthesis in the lab to generate real-life data, accelerating the drug discovery timeline from an average of 5 years to just 2 years. Iktos' innovative approach leverages AI and robotics' potential to revolutionize pharmaceutical R&D, offering promising solutions to enhance the efficiency and success rate of bringing new medicines to patients globally.
