GIANT MAGNETORESISTIVE SENSOR TECHNOLOGY TRANSFER TO CONTACTLESS POTENTIOMETERS

Objective

SIEMENS has developed, in a BRITE-EURAM project, a copper leadframe sensor sensitive to direction and not to the intensity of the magnetic field, in a range between 5-10KA/m. This means that signal output of this sensor is independent of the sensor position relative to the magnet in lateral or axial direction in the range of several millimetres.
NACESA a Spanish manufacturer of potentiometers contacted SIEMENS in order to incorporate this kind of GMR sensor technology into its product.
NACESA has concluded that a GMR sensor would be the ideal INNOVATION to be incorporated in potentiometers with a high exigency of long-life (>108 cycles) in hard working conditions such of vibrations and accelerations.
The advantages of GMR potentiometers in comparison with contact and MR non-contact potentiometers are: - In comparison with contact potentiometers: very long duration (they overcome easily 108 cycles) due to non-mechanical wearing features.
- In comparison with MR non-contact potentiometers: Wider tolerance for relative position between magnet and sensor, which means a high vibration resistance and longer duration; a MR potentiometer with a similar vibration resistance needs a very high mechanical accuracy, which means higher costs.
The objective of the project is to validate GMR technology and the following actions will be carried out by the partners: - SIEMENS will transfer the latest GMR sensor technology to NACESA. - NACESA will integrate GMR sensor technology in its potentiometers for some automobile applications and analysing the most interesting and feasible (from both economical and technical points of view) applications. - Two additional partners, VALEO and MANNNESMANN VDO, will l participate as end-users in order to verify that GMR potentiometers are adequate to be incorporated to their automobile applications. - A strong dissemination phase.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
