Objetivo The surface and upper layers of the earth subsurface are the basis of our existence. The geological and environmental information on the shallow subsurface is used by both authorities and engineering companies in their decision-making processes, e.g. regarding the construction of new roads, the development of new housing or fanning areas, or the building of factories. Moreover, the geo-environmental measurements from the survey and monitoring boreholes provide vital data used for preventing man-made and natural disasters, such as flooding, landslides, earth surface subsidence and contamination of subsurface aquifers. Thus the geo-environmental data from boreholes are of great importance for an economic and environmentally responsible development of the EU's multicultural society. However, this information is organised only at a national level and based on national standards and accessible solely in the national language. The eEARTH project demonstrated the possibility of making this restricted source of public geo-environment information available to all users in the European Union. It provided multilingual Internet software tools for accessing and translating the geo-data from the national geo-databases.The information was made accessible via both PC and mobile devices that can be connected to the Web portal. These tools are capable of enhancing and simplifying significantly the cross-border exchange of geo-data, thus optimising planning and decision-making for EU authorities as well as international users of shallow subsurface data.
