One-stop-shop for case law

Objective

Case law represents a substantial public sector resource in Europe and is in growing demand. Organisations needing to access such information on a regular basis include legal practices, corporate lawyers, courts services and academics. The market within the enlarged Europe is estimated to comprise around 260,000 professional organisations, 3000 courts and at least 500 academic institutions. Accessing this information is complicated, however, especially across borders.

CASELEX, a new project under the eContent Programme, aims to disseminate national case law at European level. The project will collect and distribute case law from 10 European countries. To achieve this it will set up a European case law backbone, accessing and converting the comprehensive base of case law into easily obtainable and usable knowledge for open distribution through intermediaries and directly to end-users.

The prime end-users of the content will be legal practitioners such as judges, lawyers, academics, and paralegals. The project is based on a strong public/private partnership involving specialised legal publishers, business publishers, law firms, courts services and academic institutions.

CASELEX is expected to have a major impact on the reuse of legal public sector information, to the benefit of the legal community and European society at large.
