Objective
The DicoPro project addresses the need for a uniform, platform-independent interface for accessing multiple dictionaries and other lexical resources via the Internet/intranets. Based on HTML and Java, the client software should shield the end-user -- typically language professionals (writers and translators) as well as those in the educational sector -- from storage and file format concerns.
To facilitate fruitful exploitation of existing linguistic resources, DicoPro will also explore various lexical data distribution, payment, and licensing schemes, whereby the intellectual property rights concerns of publishers are balanced against the need for end-user convenience.
The lexical resources available for the project will be updated and/or adapted to existing standards. Tools to prepare the data (e.g. conversion from SMGL format to display format and entry indexing) will be provided in the project.
The project's dissemination efforts will center around a model, Internet-accessible server with test data for demonstration purposes.
