Systematic Mathematical Theory Exploration within the Theorema System: Case Studies

Objective

Systematic mathematical theory exploration is at the heart of the emerging field of mathematical knowledge management. Bruno Buchberger has recently proposed the 4 threads Theory Exploration Model. The 4 threads are: - the ideas thread (consisting of conc entrated mathematical knowledge in the form of definition, theorem, algorithm, problem schemes); - the theory thread (definitions, theorems, problems, algorithms); - the reasoning objects thread (proof objects, solution objects, simplification objects); - the reasoners thread (provers, solvers, simplifiers and their correctness). The aim of this project is to apply this model in two important case studies, in the Theorema system: systematic exploration of the theory of tuples, and systematic exploration of t he theory of Groebner bases. This will result in the build-up of the respective theories and, as a side-effect, the implementation of exploration tools in the Theorema system.

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)

CORDIS classifies projects with EuroSciVoc, a multilingual taxonomy of fields of science, through a semi-automatic process based on NLP techniques. See: The European Science Vocabulary.

Keywords

Project’s keywords as indicated by the project coordinator. Not to be confused with the EuroSciVoc taxonomy (Fields of science)

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
