Objective
To verify and demonstrate a new confirming concept of fine crushed biomass in a pulverised coal fired boiler. Co-firing of pulverised and dried biomass has high operation and investment costs for fuel pre-treatment, up to 10e/MWh. The new RI- BIO burners allow bigger particle size and higher moisture content of biomass.
This enables to utilise simpler pre-treatment and to reduce its costs to the level of 2e/MWh. The target of annual biomass use of Suomenoja CHP plant (280MW) is 20% of fuel energy, means18MWe. Cofiring plant performance will be monitored. Ultimate objective is to commercialise a new concept that could be installed at hundreds of pulverised coal-fired boilers in Europe. New concept is designed to replace 10-30% of coal with biomass.
