An environmental modelling tool to support sustainable urban planning

Objective

The principal aim is to develop an integrated resource flow modelling and complementary educational tool. The objective of the modelling tool is to enable planners (municipalities, architects, developers) and specialist consultants of urban (re) developments to rapidly define the mix of uses, site configuration, building design, and resource management (supply and demand) options that optimise the community's degree of sustainability (nett resource consumption and emissions) within defined economic constraints. This tool will be tested by end-users on case study sites and parametric studies will be performed to generate design guidance (pre-normative).

The results plus socio-economic research, technology descriptions, reviews of technical installation/maintenance issues will inform an educational tool to provide training and guidance. By facilitating more de-centralisation SUNtool will increase security of energy supply, reduce emissions and improve local employment & social cohesion.
