Coherent wave guides for atom-interferometry

Objective

The Institute of Electronic Structure and Laser on Crete is the largest institute of the Foundation for Research and Technology Hellas. It places particular emphasis on fundamental research and the involvement in high technology areas and has a strong background in experimental laser-matter interaction and theoretical quantum-optics. One of the current strategic goals of the Institute is the initiation of an activity in the field of experimental quantum optics and cold-atom physics, where it already has an active theoretical research group.

The development of experimental quantum-optics and cold-atom physics are expected to provide further impetus, expand the options offered and complement going projects. It is expected to act as a catalyst for the institute as a whole. We hope that a ToK grant will allow us to acquire the relevant experimental experience that does not yet exist in Greece. For these reasons, the Institute considers this proposal of prime importance to its future success.

The Transfer of Knowledge will be lead by an experienced researcher currently leading a Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) experiment in the Netherlands. He will help to establish the first cold-atom group in Greece. After obtaining the first BEC in Greece, the aim of this proposal is to demonstrate the first fully functional prototype of a guided matter-wave interferometer. Such a device can be exploited to measure extremely small accelerations and rotations, well beyond today's possibilities, making the matter-wave-guide interferometer a candidate for fundamental measurements such as the Newton's gravitational constant or relativistic frame dragging (Lense-Thirring effect).

Ultimately, the interferometer can be fitted onto a single microchip and combined with micro-electric devices -- thus opening it up to real-life applications. Possible uses include covert navigation and measurements of the earth's gravitational field in the search for minerals.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
