Objective
This project aims at the realization of a user environment which is extremely suitable for multi-media and teleworking applications over existing and future digital networks. Recent advances in compression technology for video and audio, and the availability of global digital communication networks serve as a starting framework which will make those new methods of cooperation possible.
The integrated desktop communications package, will unite services such as: computer data and image exchange, multi-media e-mail, interactive video/speech, videophony, white board, etc. The interface will offer desktop video conferencing possibilities when higher bandwidth connections become available. The user interface module will support multiple computer platforms to cope with the multitude of different systems which are in use at the research communities over Europe.
Underlying networks can be LAN, Internet, ATM, point-to-point dial-up (modem). Existing standards in image compression (MPEG) and communication protocols will used as much as possible. A High level protocol will be developed, that allows simultaneous transmission of audio, video and speech. Generally, the system should be able to cope with different communication bandwidths and hence, different audio qualities and video resolutions. The system will incorporate handshaking and adaptation to available channel bandwidth. In addition, there is a research effort in reducing the required bandwidth for the multi-media services. The consortium especially focuses on the improvement and implementation of video compression algorithms.

Funding Scheme
Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
