Demolinguistics and Language Revitalisation

Objective

I propose a comprehensive and comparative assessment of the current status, ongoing dynamics and future tendencies for linguistic competence and usage within the Autonomous Communities of Valencia, Catalonia, the Balearic Islands, the Basque Country, Navar ra and Galicia. . The purpose is to characterize how the demolinguistic situation has been evolving in the recent past and to assess the relative importance of the key demographic and linguistic processes for further changes over the next 50 years, of comp etence in understanding, speaking, reading and writing, as well as actual usage, of the historical language in each community. The former goal is achieved by detailed statistical comparison of the 1991 and 2001 censuses, while the latter is based on demogr aphic projections into which we incorporate models of language transmission, acquisition and immigrant integration. I am gathering data from official sources in each community on recent and current population structure and demographic processes as well as linguistic competence. I am organizing this material to provide the input to our recently completed demographic projection program, DMLX, where the cohorts are defined by age, sex, residence and language competence levels. The currently functional version of the DMLX will be improved, generalized and made accessible to other researchers. To investigate the relative importance of the demographic and linguistic parameters, our approach is to generate a large number of scenarios using random samples of these parameters, and to submit the results of projections under each of these scenarios to a multiple regression analysis to evaluate the relative importance of the parameter effects. The projections and the parameter evaluations will be analyzed from a compar ative point of view to produce a dynamic assessment of the future of the historical languages in Spain.
