Platform for Cognitive Robotics

Objectif

Working within the framework of cognitive robotics, a field concerned with giving machines mental and motor skills comparable to those of humans, this project aims to develop a new research platform for building the kinds of large-scale A.I. systems necess ary to make that possible. The resulting research platform will provide researchers and students with tools and methodologies for creating new artificial intelligence systems, and will catalyse and support world-class academic research in several areas of cognition, including dynamic computer vision, computer hearing, multimodal communication and dialogue, speech recognition and speech synthesis, knowledge representation and inferencing. Using this platform we will build a prototype virtual robot that can c ommunicate with people in real-time via speech and facial gesture. Our robot will perceive the world through cameras and microphones, and interact with real people in real-time using a graphical face and voice. The robot will be able to speak and make faci al gesture to express its thoughts; it will be able to interpret speech and gestures from a human. The communication will be as close as possible to the way humans interact face-to-face. In addition to its face and body, the robot will be able to control c omputer graphics and audio as part of its action repertoire, allowing the robot to teach students and tell them stories. Starting with this project, our longer-term vision is to set afoot a research network in this area and establish a world-class cognitiv e robotics research center at Reykjavik University. We intend to develop highly advanced interactive robots that push the state-of-the-art in several areas of artificial intelligence, including natural language understanding and generation, multimodal perc eption of real-world events, knowledge integration, and real-time responsiveness. We have assembled a world-class team to achieve this and we expect to achieve significant progress in this area.
