Summary of the context and overall objectives of the project

As demand grows for safer, more efficient electric vehicles, advanced thermal insulation is becoming critical — especially to protect and manage the heat of battery packs. Silica aerogels are among the most effective insulation materials ever developed, but their high cost and complex production have kept them out of large-scale applications.
The EN.MOTION project by Enersens changes the game. It introduces a continuous manufacturing process for ultra-thin, ready-to-use aerogel blankets (Skogar®) that deliver exceptional thermal performance at a fraction of today’s cost. This breakthrough paves the way for widespread use of high-performance insulation in batteries and other cutting-edge technologies.

Work performed from the beginning of the project to the end of the period covered by the report and main results achieved so far

During the project, all manufacturing steps were optimized to maximize efficiency, reduce energy consumption, and improve product quality. Breakthrough, patented technologies — including the use of microwaves for rapid and uniform drying — were integrated into the process. Tailor-made equipment was developed specifically for the precise and efficient production of thin sheets of aerogel composite material. The result is an innovative, highly efficient, and cleaner manufacturing process that sets a new benchmark for advanced thermal insulation production.

Progress beyond the state of the art and expected potential impact (including the socio-economic impact and the wider societal implications of the project so far)

The Skogar® product is now readily available to innovators developing the next generation of high-performance battery packs, offering exceptional thermal insulation to enhance safety and efficiency. Produced entirely in Europe, with 100% of its feedstock sourced from within Europe, Skogar® provides a clear sovereignty, supply chain, and environmental advantage to European clients. To meet growing demand from battery manufacturers, as well as aerospace, defence, and micro-electronics sectors, additional funding is required to scale up production capacity and fully unlock the market potential of this breakthrough technology..
