Project description
Innovative ventricular repair device for heart failure treatment
Heart failure (HF) affects millions of people worldwide, causing ventricular remodelling that results in the displacement of the papillary muscles. Progressive papillary muscle displacement leads to severe functional mitral regurgitation (FMR) in some patients, who receive existing medical device treatments. However, the majority of the patients without severe FMR are not qualified for surgery and have no therapeutic option available. Cardiac Success from Israel is developing a transcatheter ventricular repair device for the improvement of cardiac function in HF patients. The EU-funded V-sling project aims to finalise product optimisation, verification and validation, and carry out the preclinical testing followed by the first-in-human study.
Objective
Heart failure (HF) represents a major public health concern, affecting around 13M people worldwide. A major risk factor for HF is a myocardial infarction, which causes ventricular remodelling, during which the ventricle enlarges, making the heart even less effective at pumping blood, and
results in displacement of the papillary muscle. Progressive papillary muscle displacement leads to severe Functional Mitral Regurgitation in about 20% of the patients, the only ones currently receiving treatment because of the severity of the condition. The remaining 80% of patients don’t
experience severe FMR and are not considered for surgery: they will continue to suffer, and likely die since there is no therapeutic option available. Cardiac Success develops the V-sling system, a transcatheter ventricular repair device to improve cardiac function in HF patients. The
objectives of the project are to finalize product optimization, complete V&V and pre-clinical testing, and perform the FIH study.
