Reliable Medical Grade Home-Based Test for Self-Use for people with Sleep DIsorders

Project description

New diagnosis and treatment for sleep disorders

Sleep disorders afflict a third of the global population, spanning all ages and demographics, and present a significant public health concern. Despite their prevalence, these disorders often remain unrecognised and underreported, leading to serious medical complications and potentially masking underlying mental health issues. Diagnosis primarily relies on overnight polysomnography (PSG), an expensive and impractical method due to its limited availability and artificial sleep environment. In this context, the S-trodes project introduces Smart Skin technology, an accessible home-based solution that promises accurate monitoring and treatment efficacy assessment, potentially transforming sleep disorder management. With EIC funding, the project aims to optimise its platform for clinical validation, paving the way for widespread use in Europe.

Objective

Sleep disorders are prevalent in 1/3 of the global population, across various age groups, and considered a public health epidemic. Nevertheless, sleep disorders are often unrecognized and under-reported. These disorders can contribute to other medical problems, and some may also be symptoms for underlying mental health issues. Sleep monitoring is essential for reliable diagnosis and improved management of sleep disorders. Currently, sleep disorders are only measured during an overnight Polysomnography (PSG); however, this method is limited in clinical implication due its unavailability, high cost, unnatural sleep environment and episodic brain patterns. Smart Skin technology enables monitoring treatment efficacy: the platform is designed to replace PSG with home-based accessible technology. The EIC funding will enable X-trodes to optimize its platform and to perform the clinical validation activities necessary to obtain CE Mark and start commercialization in Europe.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
