ADAPTING AND UPGRADING A SIGNAL MANAGEMENT SYSTEM FOR TESTING CONCRETE

Objective

Starting with a prototype instrument (Signal Management System - SiMaS), developed under the CRAFT programme "Non Destructive Testing and Imaging of Concrete", this project is concerned with producing a marketable, unique ultrasonic test instrument to non destructively image concrete. The aims and objectives of the project are twofold. To upgrade to pre-production prototype standard a non destructive, concrete imaging instrument, enabling operators to obtain information as to the quality (resistance) of concrete and to detect and possibly determine the state of embedded members such as ducts and rebar within the concrete. The system will be portable, rugged, easy to use, and provide on site information for the engineer to act on. Definition phase activities (see below) will result in defining a specific target market and detailed instrument specification. To look at other applications for the underlying technology with a view to focusing the SiMaS on specific spin off market opportunities. The following activities will help in fulfilling the aims and objectives above.- Definition of technical limits of SiMaS: Technology providers to produce technical limits of SiMaS prior to market survey.- Qualitative and quantitative market study: Concentrating initially on the three partner countries, the most urgent necessities of the markets in terms of technical performance and what market volume they represent will be established, feedback will be given to technology providers to establish feasibility, include spin off possibilities.Development and on site testing at various potential user locations under different conditions the pre-production SiMaS instruments.
