Long-period observation of biological processes at Picosecond time resolution and Nanometre spatial resolution: a research-training network for advanced imaging Technology

Objective

Based on novel technology developed in the framework of a new FP6 STREP project (STRP 013880) we propose to establish a multidisciplinary Research Training Network for training young scientists in advanced Fluorescence Microscopy techniques that will be applied to address a broad range of biological questions. Special emphasis will be put on Fluorescence Lifetime Imaging Microscopy (FLIM), a method of choice to study dynamic interactions of bio-molecules in the living cell, and its extension into the NanoScopy domain (FLIN). Young scientists employed in the network will further develop and apply these techniques to investigate the dynamics of individual molecules (Molecular Engines) as well as of complex cellular processes (Cell Imaging).

The young scientists will have the opportunity to work and to be trained in up to eight European countries, being tutored by experienced local staff scientists. Inter-sectorial exchange of young scientists will be strongly promoted and the composition of the network with academic and industrial partners in the fields of physics, biology and engineering will ensure state-of-the-art training of next-generation scientific researchers possessing the broad, interdisciplinary skills necessary for innovative research that drives development both in economy and health care. This network will significantly improve the competitiveness of the ERA by expanding European human resources with young researchers skilled in the art and science of advanced nano-scale microscopy.
