Tailored multifunctional Polymer-derived nanoCeramics

Objective

A European consortium of six universities, two research institutes and four industries propose a collaborative Marie Curie Research and Training Network in the field of novel, nanoscale, multifunctional ceramics that are made from polymers. These ceramics are photo- and electro-luminescent, semiconductors and gas sensing, and also resist corrosion and deformation up to 1500°C. The nanodomain structure of this ceramics evolves from the molecular network of the polymer. The scientific goal of the project is to investigate this linkage, and use this knowledge to design new multifunctional materials.

The proposed research is intrinsically interdisciplinary. Expertise in chemistry is required to design the precursors; physical chemistry and materials science are needed for characterizing and modelling the nanostructure of the ceramics and relating it to mechanical and phase stability at high temperatures; solid state physics is required to relate the nanostructure to the functional properties, and knowledge of mechanics to control the polymer rheology for creating unusual shapes (e. g. fibres) and composite structures. The network of partners is tightly integrated to serve the interdisciplinary training, especially of the early stage researchers.

The training pro gram is designed to provide a strong interdisciplinary foundation to young professionals who will lead this field unto new frontiers of science and technology. Clear mechanisms for individual as well as cross-institutional training have been put into place. Web and videoconference technologies will be used extensively for day-to-day interaction. Summer schools, workshops and symposia will serve to promote career development. Exposure to research at scientific institutes and industry provide intersectorial dimension to the training program. The proposed work builds on the interactions, which have been developed as a result of an earlier TMR program on silicon oxycarbide ceramics.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
