Workflow technology called WIDE allows organisations to model their business processes, and to automate implementation in real working situations. WIDE uses extended database technology as the basis of a next-generation workflow management system. WIDE's innovative features focus on extended transaction management and active rule support within a distributed framework. Extended transaction management provides flexible and reliable definitions of workflow processes. Active rule support provides reactive behaviour to cope with workflow events. These advanced features are reflected in a rich workflow model and specification language, while design support allows workflow application designers to use these features effectively. A pilot application has been developed based on the processing of healthcare insurance policies and WIDE techniques were applied to the modelling of short-stay (24h) surgery. It was used to provide informatics support in the medical decision-making, and operational control of the short stay process, from admissions through to post-operative appointments. WIDE technology is also being integrated into FORO, a workflow management system developed by Sema Group with respect to an Internet-compatible product which will allow an organization's employees to access the workflow management system from any location.
