Objective
Allergic disorders are increasing rapidly within the European Union. European groups led the discovery that diminishing exposure to microorganisms is a factor in this increase. European groups were also the first to demonstrate the presence within helminths and saprophytic mycobacteria of components that drive the formation of regulatory T cells in vitro and in vivo. This is now accepted as the explanation for the ability of exposure to these organisms to protect from allergies. The importance of this mechanism and its potential exploitation to discover new treatments for allergic disorders have resulted in its inclusion as an area of activity within GA2LEN (Global Allergy and Asthma European Network of Excellence).
GALTRAIN will:
1) expand the number of groups involved;
2) extend the epidemiology into an immunogenetic understanding of individual susceptibility to this type of disordered immunoregulation;
3) expand the range of microorganisms known to be involved in immunoregulation;
4) identify the active molecular components, their structures and their modes of action;
5) take steps towards their exploitation as novel pharmaceutical agents.
GALTRAIN members have links with industry and will work with biotech companies to facilitate eventual commercial exploitation within the EU. Most GALTRAIN fellows will register for a PhD within the institute of a GALTRAIN partner, and then, following creation of a detailed plan of training units, spend periods within the laboratories of other partners. Although the "Bologna Treatment" has not yet led to the creation of a EuroPhD, GALTRAIN members have negotiated mechanisms within their own institutions to permit the pioneering of this crucial step towards integration of European science and creation of critical mass that can compete with the USA.

Topic(s)
Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.
